San Marino houses students in hotels and residences while awaiting purpose-built halls

Rising enrolment numbers push the state and the University to seek temporary lodging solutions in Murata and Dogana Bassa.

Hotels and residences are being enlisted to house university students while the Republic awaits the construction of purpose-built student halls. In San Marino, a rise in enrolment numbers has prompted the Secretariats of State for Territory, Education and Tourism, together with the University, to seek a solution to the shortage of beds.

The first letters of intent involve a hotel in Murata and a residence in Dogana Bassa. The goal is to offer rooms at reduced rates, allowing students to live on the Titano.

Rector Paolo Pascucci, speaking to San Marino RTV, welcomed the initiative: “This letter of intent essentially proposes an interim solution while we wait to finally move forward with the creation of a proper, permanent student residence — a student house — which for us is absolutely essential to the development of our University.”

According to Pascucci, living in San Marino can help students integrate into the community. The rector also pointed to cooperation between institutions as the way forward in tackling the housing issue.

For transport, students will be able to rely on the SMUVI on-demand service. The call remains open to hoteliers and private citizens to help find additional rooms, particularly in the Castelli of Città, Borgo Maggiore and Serravalle, to ensure that the shortage of accommodation does not hinder the University’s growth.
