Revolut down on October 20: company confirms outage as over 1,200 reports flood in from Italy and card payments fail across Europe

App access fails, card payments refused across several European countries as Revolut confirms a multi-service outage and works to restore operations.

Revolut has been down since this morning, Tuesday 20 October, and the company has confirmed the disruption.

At 8:48am, Downdetector recorded 1,290 reports in Italy, a figure that climbed from virtually zero in just a few minutes: the app won’t open, logins are failing, and card payments are being declined, Apple Pay included. A minute later, the company officially acknowledged the problem.

Reports have also come in from the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Ireland, Greece and Romania.

“Outage affecting multiple services, our engineers are on it.” At 8:49am, the Revolut Support account replied to users on X, confirming an issue affecting several services with possible app malfunctions, and assuring customers that the technical team was working to restore everything as quickly as possible.

No details were given, however, on the cause of the fault or on when services would return to normal.

The data tells the rest of the story.

In the twenty-four hours beforehand, the reports line was flat, then in under half an hour it shot upward, with complaints quadrupling within ten minutes. Anyone trying to log in is met with the message “Something went wrong. Please try again later”, the same error appearing in Spanish, English and Greek on screens across the rest of Europe.

The outage affects both the mobile app and the web version.

What to do in the meantime. There’s no point uninstalling and reinstalling the app: the problem isn’t on your phone.

If you need to make a payment, keep another card or some cash on hand. And be wary of texts or emails claiming to “unlock” your account during this time: no bank ever asks for codes or passwords via message, and scammers routinely exploit outages like this one.

We will update this article as soon as the service returns to normal or Revolut announces the cause of the fault.

Update, 9:53 am (Italian time). At 9:31 am the outage was still ongoing and reports were still rising. Revolut has not yet given a cause or a timeframe for restoring service.

The problems go beyond the app and cards. Users are also reporting blocked cash withdrawals at ATMs. In Hungary, bank transfers are not going through and currency exchange is not working. Reports are also coming in from Malta and Hungary.

Revolut acknowledged the outage on X and Reddit. Its official service status page, however, was still showing all systems as operational after 9 am.

According to the monitoring site StatusGator, the first signs of the fault date back to 8:10 am.

Update, 10:12 am (Italian time). Revolut posted a statement on its Facebook page confirming the disruption affecting multiple services. “We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe”, the company wrote. It says it has been working on the issue since it was identified this morning, and apologises to those affected. There is still no word on the cause or on when service will be restored.
