San Marino has completed its accession to the ten fundamental conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), ratifying conventions No. 155 and No. 187, dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. The move has been welcomed by Libera, which highlights the contribution of the Secretary of State for Labour, Alessandro Bevitori, and now calls for these international commitments to be translated into concrete action.
“Libera expresses great satisfaction at the completion of the ratification process for Conventions No. 155 and No. 187 of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which enshrine the fundamental right of every worker to operate in a healthy and safe environment,” the party said in a statement.
For Libera, this represents a significant milestone for the Republic, strengthening its commitment to protecting workers’ rights and aligning with international standards.
“As Libera, we have always believed in the importance of this process, firmly supporting the need to strengthen protections and align our country with the highest international standards on labour rights. Today we are particularly proud to have helped turn this political commitment into a concrete result, thanks to the work carried out by the Secretary of State for Labour, Alessandro Bevitori.”
The party also acknowledges the role of trade unions, which over the years have pushed for stronger tools of prevention and protection. According to Libera, this achievement was reached through political dialogue and cooperation with social partners.
“The health and safety of workers cannot be regarded as a cost or a bureaucratic formality — they must be an absolute priority for our country. The quality of economic development is also measured by the ability to guarantee decent, safe and respectful working conditions.”
Attention now turns to the next steps. Libera is calling for an update to San Marino’s workplace safety legislation, alongside stronger prevention, training and protective measures, with particular attention to small and medium-sized enterprises.
“This important milestone must now be turned into concrete action, starting with an update of San Marino’s workplace safety legislation, as well as stronger prevention, training and protective tools, with particular attention also to small and medium-sized enterprises.”
According to the party, this work must directly involve trade unions and employers’ associations, through a structured dialogue aimed at identifying solutions suited to the characteristics of San Marino’s economic system.
“We believe it is essential that this process be built through structured dialogue with trade unions and employers’ associations, strengthening social dialogue and jointly identifying the most effective solutions for San Marino’s reality.”
Finally, Libera confirmed its intention to monitor the next steps, so that the ratification of these conventions produces tangible effects on working conditions.
“Libera will continue to firmly support this commitment, so that these important international recognitions translate into real improvements in the daily lives of workers. A country that wants to grow and progress must put the dignity of work and people’s safety at its centre. It is through this commitment that truly fair and sustainable development is achieved.”
