USL Pensioners’ Federation forms task force to combat loneliness among the elderly

A new working group aims to create opportunities for older people to meet and fight isolation.

Creating opportunities for older people to come together and combating isolation and loneliness. This is the goal of the new social working group launched by the USL Pensioners’ Federation following last week’s board meeting.

The discussion covered several issues affecting senior citizens and led to the formation of working groups that are already operational. For the group dedicated to social affairs, one of the first tasks is to identify places where people can meet and organise courses, including intergenerational ones.

“Days can go by without an elderly person having the chance to speak with anyone else, and this isolation certainly does not have a positive effect on their psycho-physical health,” the Federation’s statement reads.

Attention is also being paid to people living alone. “Single-person households are now extremely common, and they are often elderly people. It is therefore essential to ensure that everyone continues to feel part of the community.”

The secretary of the Pensioners’ Federation, Antonella Marani, stressed the need to restore and expand social spaces in San Marino.

“Our hope,” said Federation Secretary Antonella Marani, “is to be able to usher in a new season, because up to now we have seen, here in the Republic, the end of many positive initiatives that left people without the chance to spend time together.

It is important that the opposite happens!

In other words, that opportunities to meet increase — and here we must commend those who have worked hard to create new ones and keep the community spirit alive.”

The Federation also pledged its support for the preparations for the events marking 25 November, which will involve the new board members. It remains open to suggestions and ideas for developing initiatives against isolation.
