Fuel costs: government releases €1 billion for hauliers as payments begin

Rome unlocks funds to ease the burden of soaring diesel prices as transport protests and road blockades continue across the country.

A billion euros to support hauliers struggling with the rising cost of diesel. The Italian government has announced the release of funds earmarked for companies in the sector, as protests and road blockades continue nationwide.

The announcement came from Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi, following a meeting at the Prefecture in Milan with Minister Matteo Salvini and representatives of industry associations.

Of the total funds, around 480 million euros will cover all applications submitted by 30 August, with disbursements starting today. Additional resources will be allocated for September and October, although the related tax credit will not be usable until 2027.

The issue of the ongoing protests remains unresolved. Rixi acknowledged the hauliers’ grievances but warned that the blockades cannot continue indefinitely.

The government is aiming to reach an agreement as early as this afternoon, when Salvini is set to meet again with local and independent trade associations in the sector.

The goal is to prevent disruptions to the distribution of goods, particularly deliveries to supermarkets and hospitals.
