The protests that swept through several Italian cities over the weekend of 17 and 18 October were organised largely through social media. Behind part of the mobilisation is Italia in Piazza, a group formed only days ago that already has a presence on Instagram, TikTok and Telegram, as well as its own app.
Its Telegram channel has more than 4,000 subscribers, while its Instagram profile has surpassed 3,300 followers. These platforms are used to share event details, practical instructions and promotional materials for the demonstrations.
Italia in Piazza describes itself as a «non-partisan demonstration» and a «peaceful gathering of citizens», invoking Article 17 of the Italian Constitution. Its stated aim is «to focus attention on the problems we face every day».
The group’s chats include regional subgroups, sections dedicated to announcements, and spaces for sharing photos and videos. Several participants have distanced themselves from episodes of violence and vandalism that occurred during some protests, describing them as «counterproductive».
Meanwhile, in Milan, anonymous messages have circulated claiming alleged planned attacks on schools and universities, containing extremely serious threats against students. These claims have no verifiable basis, but they have fuelled concern among families and school staff.
The mobilisation, however, shows no sign of slowing down. A new group, the Movimento del 17 ottobre (17 October Movement), has also emerged, promoting peaceful demonstrations every Saturday at 3pm in cities including Milan, Bologna, Turin, Rome, Florence, Padua, Bari and Genoa.
Among the tools being used is the so-called “Mappa della rivolta” (“Map of the Revolt”), a digital platform that tracks protests, strikes and public assemblies, organised by region and city.
Users can browse scheduled events and add them directly to their smartphone calendars. The platform states that it relies solely on public sources, does not collect personal data, and excludes violent initiatives, property damage and hate-related content.
