San Marino has signed the Saint-Denis Convention, the Council of Europe treaty designed to improve safety and spectator welfare at football matches and other sporting events.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday, 3 November, at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco by Secretary of State for Sport Rossano Fabbri, acting on behalf of the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs.
The signing ceremony took place as part of the 19th Conference of Council of Europe Ministers responsible for Sport, attended by the organization’s Secretary General, Alain Berset. Andorra also signed the convention on the same occasion.
The Convention, in force since 2017, brings together personal safety, public order and spectator services. To prevent risks both inside and outside sporting venues, the treaty emphasizes cooperation among public authorities, law enforcement, organizers, federations and the public. Among its goals is also making sporting events more accessible and welcoming.
“Safety in sport goes beyond maintaining public order: it starts with prevention, responsible organization, and the ability to bring together all the institutions and stakeholders involved,” said Fabbri. “By signing the Saint-Denis Convention, San Marino confirms its commitment to contributing to a European model in which the protection of individuals and the quality of hospitality are integral parts of every event.”
Following the signing, San Marino’s next step will be the formal ratification of the treaty.
