Four years’ imprisonment and a €20,000 fine for each of the four defendants. That is the sentence requested by the State Prosecutor’s Office (Procura del Fisco) in the trial concerning the 2017 financial statements of Cassa di Risparmio (Carisp), which showed a deficit of €534 million. The news was reported by San Marino RTV, which followed proceedings as the trial resumed in court after the summer break.
Standing trial on charges of infedele administration (breach of fiduciary duty) are the former chairman of the board, Nicolino Romito, along with former board members Giuliana Michela Cartanese, Massimo Cotella and Luigi Borri.
On the compensation front, Cassa di Risparmio, which has joined the proceedings as a civil party, has requested recognition of both material and non-material damages — to be quantified separately in civil proceedings — along with a provisional award of €10 million. A broadly similar request has come from the Excellent Chamber (Eccellentissima Camera), represented by the State Advocacy Office, which is likewise seeking a provisional award of €10 million.
The proceedings are now approaching their conclusion. The next hearing is set for November 24, when the defense’s closing arguments and the verdict are expected.
