San Marino driving licences: citizens await answers on Italian conversion delays

Several citizens are reporting difficulties converting their San Marino driving licence into an Italian one after transferring their residency. On social media, they describe cases still pending and requests for clarification that have gone unanswered.

The complaints concern the new licence format introduced in 2024. According to the Vehicle Registration and Transport Office (Ufficio Registro Automezzi e Trasporti, URAT), the relevant documentation has already been forwarded to the Italian authorities for distribution to local Motor Vehicle Department (Motorizzazione civile) offices.

The hold-up may therefore stem from the updating of procedures on the Italian side, but there has been no official confirmation of the causes or an expected timeframe for resolution.

Those still waiting fear it could affect their ability to drive legally, especially if they rely on their car for work. Clear guidance for citizens whose conversion remains pending has yet to be issued.

Some users have also voiced concern about possible complications during routine roadside checks involving the new San Marino licences. So far, however, no such cases have been reported.
