‘Bulgarian affair’ trial opens: six civil-party claims filed, Christov defended by seven lawyers

First hearing focuses on civil-party applications and preliminary issues in the case over the failed sale of Banca di San Marino shares

The trial over the so-called “Bulgarian affair” and the related “parallel plan” — linked to the failed transfer of Banca di San Marino shares from the Ente Cassa di Faetano to investor Assen Christov — opened this morning before Commissioner of the Law Adriano Saldarelli.

According to Libertas, there are nine defendants in total: seven individuals and two companies. The charges, varying by defendant, include private corruption, money laundering, offences against public officials, perjury and undermining the freedom of public authorities.

Andrea Delvecchio was present in court, assisted by three lawyers. Christov, however, was absent, represented by a defence team of seven lawyers, five of whom attended the hearing.

The Eccellentissima Camera and Government, the Ente Cassa di Faetano, Banca di San Marino, the Central Bank and AIF have all applied to join the proceedings as civil parties, seeking compensation for both material and non-material damages.

Following these initial requests, the hearing was suspended for an hour at the request of the defence teams, to allow time to examine the documentation filed by those seeking to join the trial as civil parties.
