Zuppi in San Marino: “Nations must return to seeking what unites them”

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi presided over the September 3 celebrations, calling for unity and freedom born from community.

A call to freedom, community and the ability to overcome division. That was the message delivered by Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, during his visit to San Marino for the celebrations marking September 3.

Zuppi presided over the Eucharistic celebration in the Basilica of San Marino and, before the Mass, was received in a private audience at Palazzo Pubblico by the Captains Regent Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva.

Speaking to San Marino RTV, the cardinal pointed to the Republic’s own experience as carrying a message with broader significance: «This anniversary conveys a beautiful message: it is the freedom that comes from being together, from thinking of oneself together. This is the meaning of San Marino and of this community built around it».

The concept also extended to the international stage. «If we learned to stay together, and if nations too learned once again to seek what unites them in order to resolve what divides them», Zuppi added.
