All outdoor burning of brush, cuttings and plant waste is banned across the Republic of San Marino until November 15. The decision comes via a new ordinance signed by the director of Civil Protection (Protezione Civile), Pietro Falcioni, and the commander of the Civil Police (Polizia Civile), Werter Selva.
The measure was prompted by drought conditions, a lack of rainfall and the resulting increase in wildfire risk. The ban covers the on-site burning of plant material from pruning, agricultural work and land clearing.
The dangers were underscored by an incident that occurred just hours earlier in Santa Mustiola, where an elderly man lost control of a fire while burning brush along Strada Ca’ Toro. The flames quickly spread to the surrounding vegetation, prompting firefighters to intervene for roughly three hours. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Anyone found in violation of the ordinance faces a fine ranging from €500 to €1,500, with potential criminal consequences also possible.
Civil Protection and Civil Police are also urging residents to immediately report any suspicious smoke, small fires or blazes by calling 115 or 0549 888888.
