San Marino walk against racism: “Where hatred divides, the road unites”

A six-kilometre walk followed by a Palestinian communal lunch aims to promote inclusion and solidarity in San Marino on Sunday 25 October.

A roughly six-kilometre walk against racism and all forms of discrimination, followed by a convivial Palestinian lunch. That is the initiative “Where hatred divides, the road unites” (“Dove l’odio divide, la strada unisce”), organised for Sunday 25 October in San Marino by the collective San Marino per la Palestina, with the aim of promoting inclusion, solidarity and encounter among people.

The gathering is set for 9.30am at the cable car car park, from where the free walk will depart. Two routes are planned, one more challenging and one accessible to people using wheelchairs and prams, to allow participation by citizens of all ages and with different needs.

The initiative has received the patronage of the Secretariats of State for Foreign Affairs, for Education and Culture, and for Territory, and involves the collaboration of numerous local associations and businesses, including Associazione 121, Batticinque, VIP, Carità Senza Confini, Attivamente, Re-stiamo, Marciamela, Agecs, Fondazione Oltre, Forno e Bottega di San Leo and Titancoop.

From 1pm, the day will continue at Casa San Michele, where participants can choose between a Palestinian lunch prepared by chef Yousef or a pasta dish. Booking is required for lunch, while participation in the walk is free and open to all. It will also be possible to take part in just one of the two activities.

As the organisers explain, the initiative was born from a desire to create an occasion for encounter in a period marked by conflict and division.

“Walking side by side, sharing food and creating occasions for meeting one another means affirming that hatred and discrimination should not be seen as inevitable, and that everyone can contribute, through concrete gestures, to building a more humane society,” the statement reads.

The collective also stresses that “the initiative is meant as an invitation to overcome the barriers, both real and symbolic, that separate people, promoting a culture founded on respect for rights, welcome and coexistence.”

The day is open to families, young people, adults and all citizens who wish to take part. The organisers thank the associations, businesses, supporters and volunteers who contributed to preparing the event.

The meeting point is set for Sunday 25 October at 9.30am at the San Marino cable car car park, while lunch will begin at 1pm at Casa San Michele.
