San Marino at WHO summit in Copenhagen, Ugolini speaks on ageing and the future of healthcare

Health Secretary Massimo Andrea Ugolini leads San Marino's delegation to the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe.

San Marino is taking part in the 76th session of the Regional Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe, under way in Copenhagen from 27 to 29 October 2026. Leading the Sammarinese delegation is the Secretary of State for Health and Social Security, Massimo Andrea Ugolini, accompanied by the Director General of the Social Security Institute (ISS), Claudio Vagnini.

The gathering brings together representatives of the member states of the WHO European Region to discuss key public health issues and set the direction of health policy for the coming years.

Ugolini will speak during the session dedicated to healthy ageing, one of the central themes of the meeting, which also addresses the consequences of the population’s rising average age on the organisation of health services and on prevention policies.

Other topics on the agenda include the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, the prevention of non-communicable diseases, population wellbeing and the governance of WHO Europe. These are issues on which member countries are called to compare notes in order to identify shared strategies and respond to the changes affecting their respective health systems.

“Taking part in the WHO Europe Regional Committee means being present at one of the main forums for discussion on the choices that will shape the future of our continent’s health systems,” said Secretary of State Massimo Andrea Ugolini.

“For San Marino, this is an important opportunity to share our own experience, exchange views with other countries and contribute to a shared path that places prevention, innovation and people’s wellbeing at the centre throughout every stage of life. Our relationship with the World Health Organization is an important point of reference for our Republic, including in the work we are carrying out to strengthen and develop our healthcare system.”

The participation of ISS Director General Claudio Vagnini will also allow the Social Security Institute to take direct part in the international discussion on healthcare organisational models, prevention policies and prospects for the development of services.

The Regional Committee session will conclude on Thursday 29 October, with the review of the main strategies and policy documents submitted to the representatives of member states.
