San Marino to turn hospital’s green area into prevention park honouring Mariella Mularoni

The space behind the State Hospital will become the "Parco della Prevenzione", a public area dedicated to health, memory and healthy lifestyles.

A Prevention Park dedicated to the memory of Mariella Mularoni will be created in the green area situated behind the San Marino State Hospital.

The project was announced on Friday, 30 October, during the closing press conference of Pink October 2026, the month dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer prevention.

The goal is to reclaim and enhance the space, making it more accessible and usable for patients, families, healthcare workers and citizens alike.

The initiative, presented by the Secretary of State for Health, Massimo Andrea Ugolini, and the Director General of the Social Security Institute (ISS), Claudio Vagnini, aims to leave a lasting legacy of the activities promoted during the month dedicated to prevention.

The area will be named “Parco della Prevenzione – in memory of Mariella Mularoni” and will be designed as a public space devoted to health, remembrance and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.

The project will now move forward through the necessary technical and financial assessments.

“Dedicating this space to Mariella Mularoni means carrying forward a commitment that defined her institutional work: making prevention a concrete part of community life,” said the Secretary of State for Health and Social Security, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Massimo Andrea Ugolini.

“The Prevention Park was conceived to bring together memory, health and accessibility, turning an area close to the Hospital into a place open to everyone and capable of keeping attention on health promotion alive.

We will develop the project through the necessary technical and financial evaluations, so that it can become a useful and lasting space for citizens, patients, families and healthcare workers.”

The announcement comes at the close of a Pink October marked by numerous initiatives held throughout San Marino.

Once again this year, the Three Towers were lit up in pink, while Palazzo SUMS hosted the exhibition “Anima e Corpo – Le trasformazioni, i segni, le diverse dimensioni della bellezza femminile” (“Soul and Body – The transformations, signs and different dimensions of female beauty”), open to visitors until 15 November.

The exhibition, born from the Pink October art competition, explores themes of the body, transformation, care and prevention. The winning artwork will later be displayed inside the State Hospital.

The calendar of events also included the public conference “Dopo il tumore, la donna” (“After cancer, the woman”), dedicated to issues related to fertility, menopause, sexuality and gynaecological health during and after cancer treatment.

These were joined by the traditional Pink Walk (“Camminata Rosa”) promoted by ASDOS and a new edition of “Yoga for Wellbeing”, a series of sessions for cancer patients organised by the San Marino Oncology Association, running until December.

An informational postcard on breast cancer prevention was also sent to households across the Republic.

On the healthcare front, one of the key developments was the delivery of the DataBreast software to the ISS Breast Unit, donated by the San Marino Oncology Association.

The programme will allow the multidisciplinary team to collect and analyse data on patients’ care pathways in a structured way, from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up checks.

In collaboration with the San Marino Pharmacists’ Association, ISS pharmacies have also launched a project to distribute an informational booklet on breast cancer prevention.

The Cultural Institutes, the Soroptimist Club San Marino, Giorgia Boutique and Marlù also contributed to the month’s activities through awareness events and initiatives.

The Director General of the ISS, Claudio Vagnini, also highlighted the project’s value in terms of improving the quality of the hospital’s welcoming environment.

“A hospital is made up of care and expertise, but also of places capable of welcoming people,” said ISS Director General Claudio Vagnini.

“Restoring value to the green area behind the Hospital also means considering the human dimension of care, offering patients, families and professionals a space to live in.

Dedicating it to Mariella also allows us to turn her memory into something concrete and close to people.

Prevention doesn’t belong only to clinics and check-ups: it is a culture built every day, through information, awareness, relationships and attention to everyone’s needs.”
