“Good, but not great.” Fabio Righi of Domani – Motus Liberi has weighed in following the approval of San Marino’s new law in support of the family, acknowledging the positive aspects of the measure while criticizing its overall approach and calling for broader action on employment, services and work-life balance.
“The new law contains useful and positive measures. We recognized and supported them. But it could — indeed should — have been far bolder, with a completely different approach and vision,” writes Righi.
The D-ML representative then recalls several proposals put forward during the debate on the law that were not accepted. “We had proposed greater flexibility and smart working, leave for enrolling children in nursery, vouchers for care services, psychological and home support after childbirth, and greater protections for the self-employed and freelance professionals, who are ALWAYS FORGOTTEN!”
“Proposals rejected. Because this wasn’t the right context…,” adds Righi, who then turns his attention to the issue of declining birth rates and the need, in D-ML’s view, to act beyond mere financial support measures.
“Because declining birth rates cannot be tackled simply by increasing allowances and contributions. What’s needed is jobs, housing, services, time for children and security in the future,” he argues.
For Righi, then, the measures just approved represent only part of what is needed. “Truly supporting the family means building a country in which choosing to have a child is not an obstacle course, but a possible and sustainable choice. We will keep pushing on this.”
The conclusion reaffirms the position of the Domani – Motus Liberi representative: “Families don’t just need help. They need a country built around them too.”
