The schools designed by Gilberto Rossini take centre stage in the new philatelic issue from Poste San Marino. “Scuole per una comunità” (“Schools for a community”), available from Monday, 21 September, pays tribute to the Sammarinese engineer and his contribution to shaping the Republic’s landscape.
Rossini, who headed the State Technical Office (Ufficio Tecnico Statale) from 1961 to 1996, devoted a significant part of his career to designing school buildings, conceived not merely as places of instruction but as open spaces integrated into their surroundings.
The 0.95-euro stamp depicts the Cailungo nursery school, while the three cinderella labels are dedicated to the Murata primary school and the Cà Caccio primary school, the latter also portrayed through an image of the construction site.
Rossini’s career also includes several other public works in San Marino, from the Cinema Teatro Turismo to the Church of Borgo Maggiore, whose construction he oversaw based on a design by architect Giovanni Michelucci. His works have been featured in leading specialist magazines and even at the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale.
The issue will have a print run of 15,000 souvenir sheets and will come with a QR code giving access to the documentary “Un’idea di Città” (“An Idea of a City”) by Massimo Salvucci, dedicated to Rossini’s works and legacy.
