The person believed to be behind the Instagram page of the “Movimento 17 ottobre” (October 17 Movement), which promoted demonstrations in several cities across northern Italy, is reportedly a thirty-year-old Italian man of Moroccan origin, holding a PhD and a background in geopolitical studies.
According to a report by Tg1, the young man was identified by police and taken to the Milan police headquarters (questura) for questioning. Described as an activist close to pro-Palestinian movements, he also reportedly works as a freelance journalist, having collaborated with outlets including Il Fatto Quotidiano.
Earlier in the day, officers from Brescia’s Digos (the police division for general investigations and special operations) searched his parents’ home, located in the area between Mazzano and Gavardo, where the family still resides.
During the search, investigators reportedly found material considered relevant to the ongoing inquiry.
Investigators are now working to reconstruct the thirty-year-old’s role in managing the social media page and organizing the mobilizations, following last weekend’s clashes and ahead of new protests planned in several Italian cities.
