Lunetta Savino will star in “Mother Courage and Her Children,” on stage Thursday, 5 November at 9pm at the Teatro Nuovo in Dogana. The production, presented by San Marino Teatro, is directed by Leo Muscato.
At the heart of Bertolt Brecht’s drama is Anna Fierling, a trader who crosses war-torn Europe during the Thirty Years’ War with a cart of goods. She follows the armies and sells to soldiers: the conflict allows her to survive, but it puts her family in danger.
“Brecht doesn’t tell the story of a woman overwhelmed by war, but of a woman who lives because of war,” explains Muscato. “That’s why it still concerns us today.”
Savino describes the character as “a mother, a trader, a fighter,” and finds in the text “our capacity to adapt to pain until it becomes normalized.”
The staging revolves around the cart, which changes shape throughout the performance until it is reduced to a mere skeleton. The music, arranged and performed live by Giua, interrupts the action and underscores its meaning.
Alongside Savino are Gloria Carovana, Salvatore Cutrì, Gianluca Ferrato, Niccolò Ferrero, Lorenzo Grilli, Simone Luglio, Valentina Martiniello and Mauro Parrinello. The production is by Teatro Stabile di Bolzano and Teatro Stabile di Torino, Teatro Nazionale.
Tickets are available on the San Marino Teatro website and at the Teatro Nuovo box office, which opens four hours before the performance begins.
