Democracy and the crisis of institutions: RETE hosts talk with Alessandro Simoncini

A public evening organized by RETE explores how democracies can keep their rules and institutions while losing their substance.

On Friday 30 October at 9 pm, at the RETE headquarters in via Trasmundo da Fano 4 in Murata, the second evening of political studies takes place, dedicated to the concept of post-democracy with professor Alessandro Simoncini.

2nd evening of political studies
RETE headquarters, via Trasmundo da Fano 4, Murata
Friday 30 October 2026, 9 pm
“Post-democracy: genealogy and critique of a concept” (prof. A. Simoncini)

This is the second appointment in the series of political discussion evenings open to the public and organised by RETE.

This Friday professor Alessandro Simoncini, who teaches political philosophy at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, will analyse the genealogy of the concept of post-democracy and will illustrate some of the ways in which, in contemporary political debate, this concept is used to show how the endurance of democratic institutions and formal rules goes hand in hand with the progressive erosion of their substance.

The talk will include an open debate on how democracy is analysed in political thought and on the forms it takes today.

It will therefore be an open conversation, with ample room for contributions from the floor, during which the San Marinese professor will help the audience make sense of the historical turning points and political dynamics behind the crisis of Western democracies.

The appointment is at 9 pm at the RETE headquarters in via Trasmundo da Fano 4 in Murata.

Alessandro Simoncini, born in 1968, lives in San Marino and teaches political philosophy at the University for Foreigners of Perugia. His recent publications include:
