There are 179 diplomatic officials and diplomatic and consular agents representing San Marino across different areas of the world. This network is tasked not only with managing the Republic’s institutional relations, but also with assisting citizens abroad, supporting businesses and fostering new economic and cultural ties.
The role of San Marino’s diplomatic and consular network was precisely the focus of the traditional annual meeting organised by the Secretariat of State and the Department of Foreign Affairs. The event brought representatives working beyond the border back to Titano and provided an opportunity to take stock of foreign policy priorities.
The figures paint a picture of an international presence that is particularly extensive given the country’s size. San Marino maintains bilateral relations with 160 states, 159 of which at diplomatic level, relying on officials, diplomats and consuls distributed across numerous parts of the world.
The day began at Palazzo Valloni with an audience granted by the Captains Regent Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva. During the meeting, participants highlighted the work carried out by the representation network in protecting Sammarinese citizens abroad, as well as in supporting companies interested in international markets and promoting the Republic’s image.
Proceedings then continued at the University of San Marino, where the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Luca Beccari, thanked diplomats and consuls for their daily work on behalf of the country. The discussion also helped outline what Beccari described as “the new season of Sammarinese foreign policy.”
This is a phase in which the role of representatives abroad is set to become even more important. Looming in the background is the upcoming signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union, seen as a starting point for further strengthening Titano’s international standing.
The goal, however, is not to focus foreign policy exclusively on Europe. San Marino aims to continue developing bilateral relations beyond the continent as well, along with its presence in major multilateral organisations, making the diplomatic and consular network one of the central tools of this strategy.
Also speaking during the day were the Director of Political and Diplomatic Affairs, Alessandra Albertini, and Luca Ghinelli of the Directorate for European Affairs. The first edition of the volume “La Repubblica nel mondo. Annuario della politica estera sammarinese (I/2025)” [“The Republic in the World. Yearbook of Sammarinese Foreign Policy”], edited by Professor Michele Chiaruzzi, was also presented.
