San Marino-EU deal: cross-border workers demand answers, “enough with unresolved issues”

The association A.F.I.S. calls on institutions to use the new EU association agreement as a chance to tackle taxation, pensions and purchasing power issues affecting Italian cross-border workers.

The agreement between San Marino and the European Union marks a step forward, but for thousands of Italian cross-border workers, many problems remain unresolved. Calling for concrete answers is A.F.I.S., the Associazione Frontalieri Italia San Marino (Italy-San Marino Cross-Border Workers Association), which is urging institutions to use this new phase to address long-standing issues.

At the heart of the concerns are taxation, the effects of the new IGR regulation, the erosion of purchasing power, and double taxation on the pensions of former cross-border workers.

“It’s an important signature, but now we need action. The Association Agreement with the European Union cannot, on its own, resolve all these problems. It would be a mistake to fuel automatic expectations. However, it can represent a new opportunity to strengthen dialogue between San Marino, Italy and European institutions, fostering a more attentive approach to the issues affecting cross-border workers,” the association stresses.

Another opportunity for dialogue could come from strengthened relations between Rome and San Marino. A.F.I.S. is closely watching the October 20 meeting between the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Luca Beccari, and Italian Deputy Minister Edmondo Cirielli, hoping for progress on tax and welfare matters.

The association highlights the role played by the thousands of Italians who cross the border every day to work in San Marino’s businesses, contributing to the Republic’s economy.

A.F.I.S. will continue to gather reports and bring workers’ requests before institutions, calling for concrete and verifiable commitments.

“The signing of the Agreement is important news for San Marino. We hope it can also become good news for those who, every day, contribute to the growth of the Republic through their work,” the association concludes.
