Sammarino championship: Tre Penne thrash Murata to climb into second place, Tre Fiori rescued late on

Tre Penne's 3-0 win over Murata lifts them above Virtus into second, while Tre Fiori snatch a 2-2 draw against Cailungo in a dramatic finale.

Tre Penne beat Murata 3-0, leapfrogging Virtus to claim second place in the Sammarinese Championship and close the gap on league leaders Folgore to just two points. It was the standout result of Sunday’s round-eight fixtures, which also featured three draws, including a thrilling 2-2 between Cailungo and Tre Fiori.

At Montecchio, Bonini’s side broke the deadlock in the 27th minute through Sottile, set up by a Pastorelli free kick. The hosts doubled their advantage in the second half with Peluso’s 49th-minute strike, finished directly from a short corner routine, before Pieri sealed the win in the 72nd minute with a first-time volley off a Peluso cross.

The three points allow the blue-and-whites to capitalize on Virtus’s defeat against Folgore and relaunch their bid for the title.

Tre Fiori, meanwhile, came close to a stunning upset against Cailungo, only avoiding defeat in the closing minutes. After Mengucci put the yellow-and-blues ahead in the 50th minute, the reigning champions squandered several chances to put the match beyond doubt.

Cailungo made them pay through Bua, who struck twice within a minute. The forward leveled the score in the 78th minute with a header from a Colagiovanni cross, then completed the turnaround in the 79th with a precise left-footed finish off a De Paoli through ball.

Just as victory seemed within reach for the red-and-greens, Ben Kacem restored parity at 2-2 in the 88th minute, converting the rebound after Bernardi’s free kick was blocked by the wall. Tre Fiori avoided defeat, but now trail the summit by five points.

Fiorentino and Libertas also finished level, 1-1. The home side went ahead after 12 minutes through Baldon, netting his first goal of the season, and nearly doubled their lead with Steger, who was denied by a superb save from Foiera.

Libertas responded in the second half, equalizing through Tomassini’s long-range strike that beat Benedettini. The maroons then pushed for a winner but couldn’t find the decisive goal.

San Giovanni and San Marino Academy played out a goalless draw, with the young Titans left to rue a first-half goal disallowed against Delvecchio, along with several missed opportunities.

Cancelli’s side were reduced to ten men in the 50th minute after Giacomo Molinari was sent off, yet they continued to pose a threat. In the 75th minute, Delvecchio again came close to breaking the deadlock, only to find Casadei in his way.

San Marino Academy’s wait for their first win of the season thus continues.

Round eight closed with Folgore still at the top of the table, buoyed by their 2-0 win over Virtus in Saturday’s early kickoff. Behind them, Tre Penne climb to second, while Tre Fiori lose further ground in the race for the title.
