Israeli President Isaac Herzog has officially tasked Gadi Eisenkot, leader of Yashar, with forming the country’s new government following the October 27 elections.
The ceremony took place at the presidential residence in Jerusalem and was broadcast live on television.
Eisenkot now enters the phase of political negotiations required to form an executive and build a parliamentary majority.
Under Israel’s Basic Law, the Yashar leader will have 28 days to carry out the mandate received from the head of state.
Should the negotiations require more time, Herzog may grant an extension of up to an additional 14 days, thereby lengthening the deadline for the formation of the new government.
