Libera looks to Brazil and Serbia: “Politics belongs to the people”

The San Marino centre-left party praises citizen participation and youth engagement in recent elections in Brazil and Serbia as proof of democracy's vitality.

Libera has expressed satisfaction with the recent election days in Brazil and Serbia, placing citizen participation and the role of young people at the heart of its statement. The San Marino centre-left party reads in both experiences a sign of trust in democracy and in the possibility of influencing political choices through the vote.

“Popular participation is not a mere statistic nor a simple procedural formality, but represents the true heartbeat of democracy and living proof that people want to be the protagonists of their own destiny,” the statement reads.

On Brazil, Libera underlines the weight of electoral mobilisation, to which it attributes the reversal of the result between the first and second rounds.

For the party, “Seeing the outcome of the first vote overturned in the second round shows the full strength of the redemption and love for human dignity, confirming how citizens’ passion and determination can overcome every obstacle and change the course of events when social justice, the defence of the Republic and hope for a fairer and more sustainable future are at stake.”

As for Serbia, the San Marino movement expresses support for the students’ list, to which it attributes a victory over Vučić’s Serbia United coalition. Libera interprets this result as a call for freedom, transparency and respect for the rule of law, also linking it to the prospect of European integration.

“In the heart of the Balkans, this victory shows that the drive towards freedom, transparency, the rule of law and integration with the European family stems directly from the beating heart of the new generations and from citizens’ genuine and living will to take charge of their own future,” the party argues.

Libera then reaffirms its identity as a centre-left, reformist and progressive force, also expressing solidarity with young Europeans who are peacefully demonstrating for their future.

It is a commitment that the movement links to the democratic values shared within the Republic: “Every time a person exercises their right to vote, democracy wins all over the world and reinforces the values we share here in San Marino too.”

The message closes with an appeal to popular sovereignty: “We ideally embrace the communities of Brazil and Serbia for this extraordinary example of civic courage, which reminds us of the most important lesson of all: that politics belongs to the people, and there is no greater force than the popular will when it unites to build peace, solidarity and a better tomorrow for everyone.”
