Joe Tordella is the new consul general of the United States in Florence. The appointment directly concerns San Marino as well, since the Florence consular district also includes the Republic of San Marino, in addition to Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.
Tordella arrives in Italy after a long career in American diplomacy. Before taking up his new post, he served as deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia. Earlier in his career, he worked on communicating the State Department’s policies and programs for the Western Hemisphere and was involved in public diplomacy.
Having joined the American diplomatic corps in 2007, he has served over the years in a number of postings abroad, including Israel, Libya, Moldova, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Barbados.
Before embarking on his diplomatic career, he worked as a strategic consultant for IBM and Booz Allen Hamilton. With his new posting in Florence, Tordella takes on a role that will also see him overseeing US consular relations with San Marino.
