A third-place finish at the Mexican Grand Prix hands Andrea Kimi Antonelli the Formula 1 World Championship with four races to spare. At just twenty years old, the Bologna-born driver becomes the youngest world champion in the sport’s history, bringing the title back to an Italian driver after a 73-year wait.
Among the messages that poured in after the race was one from Valentino Rossi, who, speaking to Sky Sport, highlighted the young driver’s contribution to Mercedes’ success: “He could become one of the greatest drivers in history.” He added: “I like to compare myself to him, and I enjoy cheering him on.”
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed the achievement as a reward for talent, dedication and determination, calling it “a source of great pride for our nation.”
Sports Minister Andrea Abodi offered his congratulations along with a call to recognise and support young talents, ensuring the right conditions for them to thrive.
Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein also paid tribute to the driver: “Today Kimi Antonelli makes history twice over: at just 20 years old he is the youngest world champion ever, and the first Italian driver to win the title in 73 years. Congratulations, Kimi!”
