San Marino celebrates today, 29 October, the National Day of Care and Support, dedicated to fragile and vulnerable people and to those who care for them every day — within families, public services and volunteer organisations.
The observance stems from an Arengo Petition unanimously approved on 16 July 2025 by the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale), and runs alongside the international day proclaimed by the United Nations in 2023.
At the heart of the initiative are also the programmes run by the Social Security Institute (Istituto per la Sicurezza Sociale, ISS), ranging from home visits scheduled by general practitioners for fragile patients to training on communication and active listening.
These include the multisensory room at Colore del Grano and the “Music on the Ward” (Musica in Corsia) project. Last July, the Hospice project was also unveiled, aimed at strengthening end-of-life care.
Another key aspect concerns support for those who care for a dependent family member. Law no. 141 of 23 September 2026 introduced new provisions for families and reinforced official recognition of family caregivers.
According to Secretary of State Massimo Andrea Ugolini, strengthening local care services and supporting families means bringing assistance closer to people’s real needs.
The ISS Director General, Claudio Vagnini, in turn highlighted the commitment to combining expertise, listening and closeness, ensuring quality and continuity of care, especially in moments of greatest vulnerability.
