Prevention also depends on the ability to recognize warning signs that, when persistent, deserve attention. With this in mind, the Social Security Institute (ISS) is joining the Make Sense Campaign 2026, the European awareness and education initiative dedicated to the prevention of head and neck cancers, promoted by the European Head and Neck Society (EHNS) and, in Italy, by the Italian Association of Head and Neck Oncology (AIOCC).
As part of the initiative, the ISS is organizing two days of free ENT screenings on Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 24, at the Otolaryngology clinics of the State Hospital, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The checkups are primarily aimed at patients between 40 and 65 years of age, though they may also be extended to younger or older individuals in the presence of symptoms or suspicious lesions affecting the ear, nose or throat area.
Booking through the CUP system is required to access the screening, by calling 0549 994889.
“The goal of the campaign is to encourage timely access to specialist evaluation when persistent symptoms appear in the mouth, throat, nose, ears or neck,” notes Dr. Maria Giuseppina Suriano. “A check-up carried out at the right time can help identify, at an early stage, situations that require further investigation, guiding the patient toward the most appropriate course of action.”
The Make Sense Campaign draws particular attention to the “1 symptom for 3 weeks” rule: if a symptom fails to resolve within that timeframe, it is important to speak with your doctor or seek out the available screening pathways.
“The ISS’s participation in this campaign confirms San Marino’s healthcare institutions’ commitment to promoting prevention and early diagnosis,” says the Secretary of State for Health and Social Security, Massimo Andrea Ugolini. “Making checkups more accessible and raising public awareness strengthens our healthcare system’s ability to identify health needs and respond promptly to the community.”
