Prevention also depends on recognizing warning signs that, when persistent, deserve attention. With this in mind, the Social Security Institute (Istituto per la Sicurezza Sociale, ISS) is taking part in the Make Sense Campaign 2026, the European awareness and education initiative on the prevention of head and neck cancers, promoted by the EHNS and, in Italy, by the Italian Association of Head and Neck Oncology (AIOCC).
As part of the initiative, the ISS is organizing two days of free ENT screening, scheduled for Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, at the ENT (Otorhinolaryngology) clinics of the State Hospital, from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm.
The check-ups are primarily aimed at patients aged between 40 and 65, but may also be extended to younger or older individuals if they present symptoms or suspicious lesions in the head and neck area.
To access the screening, booking is required through the CUP service, by calling 0549 994889.
“The aim of the campaign is to encourage timely access to specialist assessment when persistent symptoms appear in the mouth, throat, nose, ears or neck,” notes Dr. Maria Giuseppina Suriano. “A check-up carried out at the right time can help identify early on situations that require further investigation, guiding the patient toward the most appropriate course of action.”
The Make Sense Campaign draws particular attention to the “1 symptom for 3 weeks” rule: if a symptom persists without resolving, it is important to speak with your doctor or seek out the available screening pathways.
“The ISS’s participation in this campaign confirms San Marino’s healthcare institutions’ commitment to promoting prevention and early diagnosis,” states the Secretary of State for Health and Social Security, Massimo Andrea Ugolini. “Making check-ups more accessible and raising public awareness strengthens our healthcare system’s ability to identify health needs and provide the community with timely responses.”
