A call for freedom, community and the ability to overcome division. That was the message delivered by Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (Conferenza Episcopale Italiana), during his visit to San Marino for the celebrations of September 3.
Zuppi presided over the Eucharistic celebration in the Basilica of the Saint and, before the Mass, was received in a private audience at Palazzo Pubblico by the Captains Regent Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva.
Speaking to San Marino RTV, the cardinal said the Republic’s experience carries a message that can take on a broader significance: “This anniversary conveys a beautiful message: it is the freedom that comes from being together, from thinking of oneself as part of a community. That is the meaning of San Marino and of the community built around it.”
A concept that also extends to the international stage. “If we learned to stand together, and if nations, too, learned once again to seek what unites them in order to resolve what divides them,” Zuppi added.
