SAN MARINO – Posing as members of the Gendarmerie (Gendarmeria), scammers have been using the claim that a victim’s identity document was cloned as a pretext to extract personal information. This is the pattern behind several attempted phone scams reported on the Titano in recent hours, which have also been circulating on social media.
In one case, the call’s recipient was told that his identity card had allegedly been cloned. The supposed officer then began asking for personal details in order to carry out a “verification.” The story failed to convince the man, however, who explained that he had not held that document for years and asked the caller to identify himself. The call was immediately cut off.
But the story didn’t end there. Just minutes later, the same man’s mother received a call as well, this time with a request concerning a family member. Having been warned beforehand by her son, the woman did not fall for the scam, and that call, too, was quickly terminated.
Several other residents have reported similar incidents on social media, suggesting a series of calls carried out using the same scheme.
In situations like these, it is important not to share personal information, document details or banking data. If a caller claims to represent the Gendarmerie or any other institution, the safest course of action is to end the call and independently contact the relevant institution through its official channels.
