Hours of anguish for Yael Trepy, the 20-year-old Cagliari forward, who was admitted to intensive care after nearly drowning in the swimming pool of a villa in Costa Smeralda.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, around 6pm. According to initial reports, the footballer ended up in the deepest part of the pool and suddenly found himself in difficulty. It has since emerged that Trepy is unable to swim.
The young player was pulled out of the water and given immediate assistance. Given the severity of the situation, he was intubated and airlifted to the Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Sassari, where he remains in the intensive care unit.
His condition remains serious. A chest CT scan reportedly revealed a significant amount of fluid in his lungs, causing difficulty with oxygenation. Doctors have therefore decided to keep him in a medically induced coma, under constant monitoring.
Trepy made his Serie A debut with Cagliari last season, scoring the equalizing goal in the closing stages of the match against Cremonese. On Friday, he had started in the rossoblù’s Coppa Italia win over Arezzo.
Cagliari Calcio said it remains in constant contact with the hospital and the player’s family. “At this moment, every thought at Cagliari Calcio is with Yael and his family,” the club said, asking for maximum respect for their privacy and promising further updates as soon as they become available.
