Tommaso Biordi to represent San Marino at Youth Chess Championships in Hersonissos

San Marino's young chess talent will compete in the Under 18 category at the 2026 European Youth Chess Championships in Crete.

A new important international fixture for San Marino chess. Tommaso Biordi will represent the Republic of San Marino at the 2026 European Youth Chess Championships, scheduled from 2 to 13 November in Hersonissos, on the island of Crete, Greece.

The young white-and-blue chess player will take part in the Under 18 competition, going head-to-head with some of the best European talents in his age group. Tommaso, born in 2008, arrives at the tournament with an international FIDE rating of 1756 points.

The excellent relations with the Italian Chess Federation and the mutual cooperation agreements in place have allowed the San Marino federation to coordinate Tommaso’s trip, as he will join the large Italian delegation both for travel and for his stay in Crete.

The European Youth Championship is one of the most important events on the continental calendar dedicated to young players. The event includes the Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 categories, with separate Open and women’s tournaments. In total, more than 1,250 players representing 49 countries will take part.

The competition will be played over nine rounds under the Swiss system, with one classical-pace game per day and a rest day scheduled for 8 November. It is a long and demanding tournament, in which Tommaso will have the opportunity to test himself against opponents from numerous European federations and gain valuable international experience.

Tommaso’s participation also represents a further growth opportunity for the San Marino chess movement, which is increasingly present at major international competitions. After the events that in recent years have seen the white-and-blue colours compete in major team and individual tournaments, this time it will be one of the movement’s young talents carrying San Marino’s flag onto the European chessboard.
