San Marino has celebrated the 177th anniversary of the “Scampo Garibaldino” (Garibaldi’s Escape), one of the most significant episodes in the Republic’s history. On 31 July 1849, following the fall of the Roman Republic, Giuseppe Garibaldi arrived on Mount Titano together with roughly two thousand volunteers, asking the Sammarinese people for “shelter and a bit of bread.”
Faced with a particularly delicate situation, the Republic chose the path of diplomacy, managing to avoid a confrontation with Austrian troops. This decision allowed Garibaldi’s men to leave the territory without bloodshed, while at the same time safeguarding the State’s independence and reinforcing the values of freedom, hospitality and neutrality that still define San Marino today.
The celebrations took place in the afternoon with the traditional institutional procession led by the Captains Regent, Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva, who reached the monument dedicated to Garibaldi to lay a laurel wreath in memory of the Hero of Two Worlds.
The ceremony concluded in Piazzetta Garibaldi with a performance by the Military Band of the Republic of San Marino, renewing an annual tradition that recalls one of the most emblematic moments in the history and identity of San Marino.
