San Marino has joined the Artemis Accords, the initiative promoted by the United States and NASA that sets out shared principles for the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. The Republic becomes the 76th signatory country. Commenting on the accession is Henry Bucci, vice president of the San Marino-America Fellowship.
“The Accords affirm fundamental principles such as transparency, international cooperation, the sharing of scientific knowledge, safety in operations, and the responsible use of space resources,” reads the statement. According to the association, San Marino’s entry places the country within an international network committed to the future of space exploration.
Bucci also points to the possible benefits for the Titan republic: “The challenge of the space economy can open new opportunities for our economic system too, for businesses, for research and for new generations, placing San Marino within increasingly strategic technological and scientific supply chains.”
The association also reads the accession in light of relations with the United States. “As vice president of the America-San Marino Fellowship, I wish to express great satisfaction at this accession, which adds a new and important piece to the already excellent relations of friendship and cooperation between the Republic of San Marino and the United States of America. A solid relationship, built over time on shared values, dialogue and a mutual desire to develop new opportunities for cooperation, which today finds in research, innovation and the space economy new areas in which to grow and strengthen further.”
For Bucci, the next step will be to follow through on the signing: “The goal must be to turn this signature into concrete opportunities, fostering new collaborations between institutions, the scientific community and businesses, and giving young Sammarinese people the chance to take a leading role in sectors destined to shape the future.”
