Pope’s visit to San Marino: ISS guidance on accessing healthcare services

Ahead of Pope Leo XIV's pastoral visit on 22 August, the ISS outlines healthcare access, traffic changes and City Pharmacy hours.

Ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s pastoral visit to San Marino on Saturday 22 August, the Institute for Social Security (ISS) has issued guidance on accessing healthcare services, flagging traffic changes and revised opening hours for the City Pharmacy.

The full statement:

The hospital and local health facilities will be operational on Saturday 22 August.

Attention: traffic changes and altered City Pharmacy opening hours.

Ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s pastoral visit to the Republic of San Marino, scheduled for Saturday 22 August, all services provided by the Institute for Social Security (ISS) will remain active.

The ISS has also arranged, in coordination with the relevant authorities, the necessary health support measures for the event, with dedicated facilities and medical teams on standby for any emergency needs connected to the presence of the Holy Father. These health measures, similar in structure to those put in place for major institutional events, have in this case been reinforced with dedicated emergency teams and vehicles, given the special nature of the visit and its significance for the country. These arrangements will not affect the regular operation of services provided to the public.

To allow the visit to take place, traffic changes have been introduced that, during certain time slots, may make it more difficult to reach the State Hospital, particularly for those living in or travelling from the mountain-side areas and other zones affected by the traffic restrictions.

Patients with appointments, tests or scheduled healthcare services on Saturday 22 August are therefore advised to check the available route in advance, taking into account official guidance issued by the authorities as well as suggested alternative routes.

If it is not possible to reach the healthcare facility due to traffic restrictions, patients are asked to promptly contact the relevant service where their appointment is scheduled, reporting their inability to attend so that the appointment can be rescheduled.

The Murata Health Centre and the Borgo Maggiore and Serravalle Health Centres will remain open as usual, along with the other local services normally operating on Saturday mornings.

It should also be noted that, on 22 August, the City Pharmacy, located at Via Donna Felicissima 21, will be closed to the public in the morning and will reopen at 1:00 pm, providing service until 7:30 pm.

The 24-hour automatic dispenser for over-the-counter health products will remain available throughout the day, with remote assistance from a pharmacist.

The Institute urges citizens to plan their journeys in advance and to follow the guidance issued by the relevant authorities regarding traffic and safety.
