Following the approval of two Arengo petitions, San Marino is entering a new phase of work aimed at drafting rules on gender transition and on the registration of children born to same-sex couples in the Civil Status registers.
Weighing in on the matter is the Secretary of State for Internal Affairs, Andrea Belluzzi, who in a social media post recalled the process launched following the vote in the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale).
“Following the approval of two petitions and the launch of a process aimed at constructively overcoming the current situation, a new phase of work is now beginning that must lead to the definition of new rules,” Belluzzi writes.
This work, the Secretary explains, will concern “rules regarding gender transition, the registration of children born to same-sex couples and, above all, every child’s right to have both parents registered as people with the duty to fully exercise their parental role.”
The stated goal, therefore, is to update the legal framework by addressing both the correction of civil status records for people who have undertaken a gender-affirmation process, and the recognition of parental relationships within same-sex families.
“A process that must place rights, responsibilities and, above all, the best interests of children at its centre,” Belluzzi concludes.
