EU presses on with Russia sanctions: “More pressure needed on Moscow”

Brussels confirms work on a 22nd sanctions package despite Washington's decision to pause new measures under the Graham act.

The European Union is not changing course on sanctions against Russia, despite the United States’ decision to suspend new economic measures against Moscow envisioned under the Graham act.

From Brussels comes confirmation that the European Commission is working on a 22nd sanctions package aimed at increasing pressure on the Kremlin and seeking to halt the war in Ukraine.

“Our sanctions are putting pressure on the Russian economy. But we need to do more,” a European Commission spokesperson said, echoing remarks made by President Ursula von der Leyen during the European Council meeting.

The Commission recalled that von der Leyen had welcomed the approval of the American sanctions law, stressing that coordinated action between Europe and the United States could make the difference in bringing the conflict to an end.

The statement comes after Donald Trump decided to suspend part of the new restrictions against Russia, justifying the move on grounds of national interest.
