The movement comments on the vote on the three requests from Associazione 121: «Society evolves while the rules stand still»
«A half-victory». That is how Rete described the outcome of the debate in the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale) on the three Arengo Petitions (Istanze d’Arengo) submitted by Associazione 121 concerning civil rights.
Two of the requests were approved: one on the legal rectification of gender on official documents, and another on the registration of birth and adoption certificates issued abroad for same-sex parent families. The third petition, however, was rejected by 23 votes to 14, with the PSD abstaining. It had called for changes to parental responsibility and for the legal recognition of both parents in same-sex parent families.
According to Rete, the petitions brought back into the spotlight issues that «politics could — and should — have addressed long ago, but instead tends to ignore». The movement also pointed out that more than five months have passed since the requests were filed in April, arguing there had been ample time to examine the matters in depth.
The movement was also critical of the decision by the majority parties — with the exception of Libera — to back a motion calling for further study of the issues. Rete warned that this approach risks «postponing and turning citizens’ requests into an obstacle course».
«When it comes to rights, a half-victory cannot be seen as a final destination», the movement concluded, pledging to keep working to ensure the issues still unresolved are eventually recognised in San Marino’s legislation.
