San Marino is once again drawing attention to the risks posed by escalating conflicts and nuclear proliferation. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Luca Beccari spoke this morning via video message at the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), currently underway in Vienna.
Also representing the Republic at the conference is Ambassador Elena Molaroni, San Marino’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna.
In his address, Beccari reaffirmed San Marino’s support for the IAEA and the Republic’s commitment to disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control.
“San Marino reaffirms its full support for the IAEA and its vital mission,” said Secretary of State Beccari. “At a time marked by growing global challenges, international cooperation, dialogue, and shared responsibility are more essential than ever. We will continue to promote disarmament and peaceful coexistence among nations. We are therefore deeply concerned about the intensification of geopolitical conflicts and the risk of a new global nuclear arms race.“
The statement from the Secretariat of State also highlighted the role played by the International Atomic Energy Agency at a time marked by heightened international tensions. “The IAEA has proven essential across all its many activities and continues to fulfill its vital global mandate,” the Secretary of State continued. “It is nonetheless clear that the Agency, like other international organizations, is currently facing numerous challenges.”
This led San Marino to call for multilateral cooperation as a tool for international security. “In this context, San Marino wishes to strongly reaffirm its support for the IAEA and for the multilateral system as a whole, which retains undeniable importance for international peace and security—not only for smaller states. Together, through cooperation and dialogue, we can build a safer and more peaceful future.”
