For the first time, three students at the University of San Marino have earned a degree in Construction and Land Management that also grants professional qualification as a surveyor (geometra), allowing them to join the Italian professional register without sitting a further state exam. They are Michele Fagiani, Mauro Lodola and Matteo Melchionna, who discussed their theses on Monday, 5 October at the university’s Dogana campus.
The breakthrough concerns the degree programme offered by the San Marino university in partnership with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. According to the official statement, direct access to the Collegio dei Geometri e Geometri Laureati (the Italian surveyors’ professional body) without additional exams applies to students enrolled from the 2023–24 academic year onward, in line with Italian regulations. Those coming from other academic paths must still take the subsequent state exam.
Alongside the three graduates, thirteen other students discussed their theses on the same day, across three different bachelor’s and master’s programmes. In total, sixteen students completed their studies that day, addressing topics related to construction, redevelopment and land management.
“The research presented,” explains lecturer Belen Giacomone, “covered subjects such as the use of innovative building materials, the recovery and redevelopment of rural buildings, the design and assembly of steel structures, energy efficiency certification, and the management of emergencies and hydrological risk.”
“Monday’s outcome is an important one,” the lecturer adds, “because it marks not only an achievement for sixteen young people, but also the evolution of professional training and the increasingly close ties between the university, the local area and the professional world.”
Representatives of the Collegio dei Geometri e Tecnici Laureati di Primo Livello di San Marino, the Collegio dei Geometri e Geometri Laureati della Provincia di Rimini, and the Collegio Provinciale dei Geometri e Geometri Laureati di Lodi attended the thesis discussions.
