One thousand euros for every child born or adopted. This is one of the most concrete measures contained in the bill to support families and counter declining birth rates, which returns today to the center of proceedings in the Grand and General Council (Consiglio Grande e Generale).
The Chamber picks up where it left off in its examination of the bill’s articles, having reached article 26 out of 36, following the first round of discussion held in the previous council session. On the table, then, is the completion of a measure aimed at expanding support tools for parents and Sammarinese families.
Among the new provisions, the 1,000-euro baby bonus stands out, granted for every newborn or adopted minor. The benefit is aimed at Sammarinese citizens, residents, and holders of ordinary residence permits, subject to the income requirements set out in the law.
To qualify for the measure, a threshold has been set: family per capita income must fall below 25,000 euros. The goal is to concentrate support on households that face the greatest financial strain from the arrival of a child.
The bonus represents just one piece of the reform. The bill addresses birth-rate policy more broadly, along with work-family balance and tools to support parenthood, with the stated aim of trying to reverse a demographic trend that has long been a concern for San Marino as well.
Today’s session will therefore be important in gauging how quickly the Council can move toward final approval of the new family law, which has now entered the concluding phase of its parliamentary journey.
