A public lecture on the meaning of liberty, a temporary exhibition at Palazzo Pubblico and a commemorative coin. San Marino is preparing to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty on Saturday, 12 September, with a programme beginning at 6:30 pm in Piazza della Libertà, in the presence of the Captains Regent Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva.
The first part of the evening will be centred on a public lecture titled “Liberty: between History, Art and Culture”, delivered by Professor Valentina Rossi and Sister Maria Gloria Riva. “On Saturday 12 September, on the occasion of the Celebrations for the 150th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, in the presence of Their Excellencies Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva, the Lectio Magistralis curated by Prof. Valentina Rossi and Sister Maria Gloria Riva will take place in Piazza della Libertà at 6:30 pm” — reads a statement from the Institutional Secretariat Office. The programme will open with remarks from the authorities, followed by the lecture from the two speakers.
The celebration will continue at 7:15 pm in the atrium of Palazzo Pubblico, where “Pacifica e Fiera” (“Peaceful and Proud”), a temporary exhibition dedicated to the Statue of Liberty and curated by the Cultural Institutes, will be inaugurated. “At the conclusion of the Lectio Magistralis, Authorities and Guests are invited to the atrium of Palazzo Pubblico, in the presence of Their Excellencies the Captains Regent, for the inauguration of the temporary exhibition celebrating the Statue of Liberty, titled ‘Pacifica e Fiera'” — the programme states. The same occasion will also see the unveiling of the commemorative coin created to mark the anniversary. The opening events will be accompanied by music from the Music Institute of the Republic of San Marino, while the evening will conclude with a toast in the atrium of Palazzo Pubblico.
The initiative is promoted under the auspices of the Captains Regent by the Secretariat of State for Internal Affairs, the Secretariat of State for Education and Culture and the Secretariat of State for Territory, in collaboration with the Institutional Secretariat. Attendance at the lecture requires prior booking: “For logistical reasons, requests to attend will be accepted until all available places are filled and must be submitted no later than 6 pm on Tuesday, 8 September” — the statement specifies. Requests can be submitted via the email address comunicazione.reggenza@istituzioni.sm or by calling 0549 882259. Attendees are asked to arrive in Piazza della Libertà by 6:15 pm.
An alternative plan has also been arranged in case of bad weather. “In the event of inclement weather, the Lectio Magistralis will be held at the Teatro Titano, Piazza Sant’Agata 5, San Marino,” the notice specifies. The event at the atrium of Palazzo Pubblico for the inauguration of the “Pacifica e Fiera” exhibition and the unveiling of the commemorative coin will, however, remain unchanged.
