He failed to stop at a police checkpoint, instead accelerating and fleeing down viale Regina Elena. The chase involving a Mercedes Amg ended when the car slammed into the post office in piazza Marvelli, after roughly two kilometres of pursuit. Behind the wheel was a 30-year-old Albanian man, already known to law enforcement, who was stopped by officers and reported while remaining free pending further proceedings.
It all began shortly before 4am on the night between Monday and Tuesday, in viale Rimembranze. A police patrol car spotted the Mercedes and signalled the driver to stop. Instead of pulling over, the man floored the accelerator and sped off onto viale Regina Elena, heading toward the port.
The car raced down the street — deserted at that hour — at extremely high speed: reportedly approaching 200 kilometres per hour, with the patrol car in pursuit. Upon reaching the roundabout at piazza Marvelli, the driver lost control. The Mercedes struck the temporary barriers marking off a construction site, then crashed into the facade of the post office.
Despite the violence of the impact and the severe damage to the car, the 30-year-old came away virtually unharmed. Officers apprehended him as additional patrol units arrived on the scene. Following initial checks, he was reported for dangerous driving. Further investigations are underway into his legal status and the reasons behind the flight.
The facade of the post office has been cordoned off over concerns of structural damage to the building caused by the crash.
