San Marino’s thousand-year history, its defense of freedom, and the Republic’s European future. These are the themes at the heart of the message released by the Party of Socialists and Democrats (PSD) on the occasion of the Feast of San Marino and the Founding of the Republic, celebrated on September 3rd.
“Today the Republic of San Marino marks 1,726 years since its Founding, according to the conventionally chosen and commemorated date” — reads the PSD statement, which recalls the “determination and foresight with which the Sammarinese managed to build, strengthen and defend their community through the great changes and heavy difficulties that arose over the centuries.”
The party then traces the path that, from the autonomy progressively gained during the medieval period, led to the establishment of the Republic and its ability to weather different eras and changes. “The Republic has managed to preserve its independence and freedom,” the PSD stresses, paying tribute to a history built “by the will of the men and women who made up its population and by the abilities of their Representatives within the Institutions.”
Freedom itself represents one of the central points of the message. “A history guided by absolute respect for freedom, which has always been considered inseparable from the very identity of this State” — the statement continues — recalling San Marino’s international role in the defense of peace, the promotion of dialogue and the affirmation of human rights. The document also recalls the recent pastoral visit of Pope Leo XIV, referencing the importance of freedom “which is realized through encounter and dialogue.”
Attention then turns to the relationship with the European Union. “Faithful to this precious heritage of values, the Republic of San Marino is preparing to strengthen its presence and support for European cooperation through the signing of the Cooperation Agreement with the European Union,” states the PSD, recalling how the path toward greater integration has been carried forward over the years by different political majorities.
“The PSD has always supported efforts to promote full access to the European single market,” the statement continues. The stated goal is to support the country’s economic, financial and social development and overcome the customs and bureaucratic obstacles that, according to the party, currently limit business activity and opportunities for citizens, especially the young.
The PSD describes it as “a certainly demanding challenge,” one destined to involve the entire country and require “adequate preparation and an overall leap in quality,” while respecting San Marino’s characteristics and the safeguard clauses provided for in the agreement.
The message closes with a wish for the anniversary: “Yet another step forward for a Republic so ancient, which continues to face the present while looking carefully toward building its future.” The PSD thus renews “its warmest wishes for a happy Anniversary to our beloved Republic and to all its citizens.”
