Rimini comes together today around the family of Tommaso Ugolini, the 19-year-old who died in recent days in the waters off Gallipoli, where he had been spending a few days on holiday with friends. The funeral will be held this afternoon, Monday 10 August, at 5.30pm in the church of Sant’Agostino. At the end of the ceremony, the coffin will be taken to the cemetery of San Martino Monte l’Abate for burial.
Tommaso was the son of Professor Giampaolo Ugolini, head of the Surgery Unit at the Santa Maria delle Croci hospital in Ravenna, and the nephew of regional councillor Elena Ugolini, both originally from Rimini.
The tragedy occurred while the young man was swimming in the sea. He disappeared beneath the waves and was pulled from the water by two lifeguards, who immediately began resuscitation efforts. A doctor who happened to be on the beach also joined the rescue attempt before the arrival of the 118 emergency medical service. Attempts to revive him continued for around 45 minutes, but nothing could be done to save the young man.
The news has caused deep sorrow in Rimini as well. Numerous messages of condolence have reached the family, including one from Michele de Pascale, President of the Emilia-Romagna Region, who expressed the regional government’s grief over the loss of such a young life.
