A wild police chase ended in tragedy for a 35-year-old man of Ukrainian origin, who died after being stopped by Carabinieri officers at the end of a pursuit that began in Cattolica and ended in Senigallia.
According to initial reconstructions, the incident stemmed from a violent argument with his wife and mother-in-law, with whom the man was on holiday. The 35-year-old then fled at the wheel of a BMW, driving for more than 70 kilometres at high speed along the Adriatic state road. During the chase, he reportedly endangered numerous motorists and narrowly missed a group of cyclists.
The pursuit came to an end in the Cesanella district of Senigallia, where the man allegedly drove the wrong way down a stretch of road and rammed the Carabinieri vehicles. After abandoning his car, he attempted to flee on foot, triggering a violent struggle with officers, during which one Carabiniere was injured. A taser was used to subdue him.
The 35-year-old was then handed over to medical personnel and taken to hospital, where he suffered a cardiac arrest and died shortly after arrival. The Ancona Public Prosecutor’s Office has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death and establish whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
