«Until yesterday we had to manage the emergency. Today we are governing the future». That was the message delivered by PDCS political secretary Gian Carlo Venturini during the 53rd Festa dell’Amicizia, as he took stock of the government’s work and outlined priorities for the coming months.
Venturini opened his speech by recalling Pope Leo XIV’s visit to San Marino and paying tribute to the memory of Mariella Mularoni, before turning his attention to the economic situation. The Christian Democrat secretary pointed to the decline in the debt-to-GDP ratio, the improvement in international credit ratings and bank deposits returning above 7 billion euros. According to Venturini, these results have also made it possible to intervene on energy tariffs and fuel prices and to support families, while the private sector has seen over 3,000 additional jobs.
«We haven’t hidden the problems. We chose to face them», he stressed, pointing to the improvement in public accounts and the Republic’s financial standing as the outcome of the choices made.
One of the next milestones will be the Association Agreement with the European Union, which is expected to be signed in the autumn. Venturini reiterated that this does not amount to EU membership, but rather a tool that will allow San Marino to access the single market while safeguarding the Republic’s identity and distinctive character. On the international front, the PDCS is also preparing to become an Associate Party of the EPP, after more than thirty years as an observer.
He also addressed healthcare, offering good wishes to the new Secretary of State Massimo Andrea Ugolini. «We believe in a hospital capable of treating Sammarinese citizens here in San Marino», Venturini said, listing among the objectives the strengthening of professional expertise, community-based medicine, the reduction of waiting lists, prevention, and care for the elderly and people with disabilities.
Other priorities include renewable energy, water resources, digitalisation, tourism and infrastructure, with the goal of strengthening the country’s strategic autonomy and introducing longer-term planning.
On the political front, the PDCS secretary claimed credit for the resilience of the governing majority, responding to those who had predicted a crisis for the executive, while confirming his openness to dialogue with the opposition on strategic issues. «Dialogue does not mean giving up one’s own ideas or softening political differences», he clarified.
«2026 has delivered important results, but every milestone brings with it a new responsibility», Venturini concluded, setting out the goal of turning the stability achieved into new opportunities for families, businesses, workers and young people.
