The San Marino Team is ready to depart for Taranto, where the XX Mediterranean Games will take place from 21 August to 3 September. The Sammarinese National Olympic Committee (CONS) will field a delegation of 29 athletes – 16 women and 13 men – competing across 11 sports disciplines, supported by coaches, team officials, and medical and organizational staff, for a total of 42 members.
Athletics, bowls, cycling, equestrian sport, swimming, fin swimming, tennis, table tennis, shooting, trap shooting and archery are the disciplines through which San Marino’s athletes will represent the country at the twentieth edition of the Games.
Among those called up are athletes who have already written important chapters in Sammarinese sporting history. In trap shooting, the delegation will include Olympic medalists and Mediterranean Games medalists Alessandra Perilli and Gian Marco Berti. In bowls, Enrico Dall’Olmo will once again don the blue-and-white colors, alongside world champions Jacopo Frisoni and Stella Paoletti, both medalists at Oran, the previous edition of the Games.
Particularly significant is the return of equestrian sport, which rejoins the Sammarinese delegation at the Mediterranean Games after a single previous appearance, back at Almería 2005. In Taranto, Nicole Conti will represent San Marino in the discipline.
The delegation also tells a compelling story of experience meeting youth. In swimming, Margherita Gregoroni, born in 2011, and Alessandro Rebosio, born in 2004, will be the two youngest members of the delegation.
The mission will be led by Chief of Mission Anna Lisa Ciavatta, supported by deputy chiefs Maurizio Mazza and Lucia Castiglioni. Rounding out the mission structure will be CONS President Christian Forcellini, CONS Secretary General and member of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (ICMG) Eros Bologna, Technical Commission member Luciano Scarponi, and the medical staff led by Dr. Gianluca Camillieri.
The first official stage on the road to Taranto will take place tomorrow, Thursday 6 August, at 5:30 PM, with an audience for the delegation at Palazzo Valloni, granted by Captains Regent H.E. Alice Mina and Vladimiro Selva. The occasion will serve to officially present the San Marino Team and, most notably, to reveal the flag bearers who will lead the Sammarinese delegation during the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony of the Games is scheduled for Friday, 21 August, at 8:00 PM, when the delegation will march in the opening ceremony at the newly renovated Erasmo Iacovone Stadium in Taranto, officially kicking off the twentieth edition of the Mediterranean Games.
“We arrive in Taranto with the ambition of building on the path we’ve followed in recent editions of the Mediterranean Games, which have brought us important results and medals,” commented CONS President Christian Forcellini. “We want to compete, to measure ourselves against top-level opponents, and to give all our athletes the chance to show their true worth. But we also want to live this experience to the fullest: to tell their stories, their emotions, the sacrifices and passion that led them to wear San Marino’s colors. Because every result, whatever it may be, carries a story with it and can help add a new chapter to the journey of Sammarinese sport.”
